As soon as Holt leaves, I go check on Angela. She’s snoozing with her cheek smooshed against the couch cushion. Chips is curled against her side.

I kneel beside Angela and stroke her cheek until she opens her eyes. “How’s your head?”

“Not bad.” She sits up, and I run through the checks the doctor told me to do. She’s still achy, a little off balance. Her stitches are bothering her.

“You can have more Ibuprofen,” I say.

“I’m good for now.”

I’d like to keep playing doctor with her until we’re both naked and sweaty and she’s feeling as good as possible. But I need to be gentle with her. So I sit beside her instead and brush my lips over the baby hairs at her hairline. I love how delicate they are.

“What do you need next? More rest? Food? Remember, full honesty. Terms of the deal.”

She grumbles. “Then I want my phone back.”

“This?” I take it from my pocket and hold it up, wiggling it in the air. She tries for it, but I easily hold it out of her reach.

“Ugh. You’re mean. I’ve been getting texts and emails, haven’t I? I need to know what they are.”

I unlock it. I’m still surprised she told me her code. “Hmm. Let’s see. Neve wrote to you. Which was very naughty of her, because I told her you couldn’t use your phone.” I snort when I read the message. “Oh, she addressed it to me.”

Neve: Matteo, are you taking care of our girl? You are the best guy in the world. I owe you! Whatever Angela wants, please get it for her? I will pay you back and then some.
